When asked about mentoring a lot of people just think that it's about giving to the under priveledged. To me, it is more than mentoring. It's an opportunity to share love. To share your life with a young person. To invest in your community. And the needs are great. As a Mentoring Recruiter for a non profit here in the Bronx area, I see a lot of youth. And they need adults who can take time to spend with them, to invest in them, and help them build bigger dreams, brighter days ahead.
Growing up on Chicago's very turbulent streets taught me a lot of things; how to survive, how to use systems to get along in life, and how to dream big. Now, I'm in the position to assist young people in living their lives out loud. It's a beautiful thing.
The challenge lies far ahead. Where to find the loving and caring individuals that will take the time to invest? Only time will tell if and when we can make it the reality of so many youth who are thirsty for knowledge, who long for the opportunity to have new experiences, and with your help, can achieve more than their dreams. More than their hearts can hold.
Yes, this more than mentoring. This is an opportunity to transform lives. Are you on board yet?
